The construction industry is the largest employer in BC. The Construction Technology program prepares students to enter the administrative and technician areas of the construction industry. The study focuses on drafting, estimating, surveying, inspecting, materials testing, and coordinating.

Topics

Codes, Standards and Regulations
Gain knowledge of the interpretation and application of municipal, provincial and national codes and standards that apply to all phases of civil and building construction.

Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
Learn to create, modify, and interpret 2D and 3D AutoCAD drawings using softwares including Revit, Civil 3D and management tools commonly used in engineering, drafting, and designing in architectural and civil engineering.

Occupational Health and Safety
Understand the role of key stakeholders involved in health and safety issues in construction.

Estimating
Use estimating techniques to determine the cost of building materials, labour, site overhead, and start-up costs associated with residential and commercial construction. Students will also learn reading and interpretation of blueprints and specifications that enables learners to effectively estimate and construct a structure. Included are architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings.

Surveying
Use surveying equipment to measure distances, angles, and elevations in order to locate site features. This information will be used to develop site plans, contour plans, and other technical drawings.

Testing of Materials
Sample and test various construction materials including concrete, soils, and asphalt. Students will use the lab at BCIT to implement testing. This course presents the principles of construction material testing and evaluating procedures through lectures, problem-solving sessions and on site experimental work.

Construction Technician

I would like to thank Edward for helping me to find practicum. The work experience that I gained from the practicum was really valuable because I've not only learned the practical part of what I've studied in school but also what I haven't learned in school. This company offered me an amazing job during my practicum.

Charles Liu

I recommend the AutoCAD and Construction Technician class to anyone wishing to become a CAD operator and construction technician. The class was oriented toward real world experience and my instructor was extremely proficient and patient.
