I found a lot of good friends.’
Janey Yu - Accounting Program, April 2007
"Originally I'm from Shanghai, China. I have been in Canada for about 3 years. I have 10 years of experience in accounting, but I realized that it's very hard to find a job if you don't have a local certificate. I decided to go to Vancouver Central College because it could provide the training I needed; it matched my accounting experience in China. Vancouver Central College's local certificates and diplomas give the students the chance to find good positions in local companies.
The most difficult thing for me in the beginning was my low level of English. Fortunately, Vancouver Central College offers free ESL training with a great teacher, Yvonne. I went regularly to classes and my English improved greatly.
After completion of the Accounting program, the school provided us with a job search class which prepared us for interviews. Sherry, our practicum coordinator, worked with me one-to-one to help me put together a strong resume and cover letter. I can honestly say it was quite easy to find a job after practicing my communication skills, which are very important for the development of a successful career.
I learned a lot of important things from my program. The most important being how to use the latest software. Software is constantly being updated and companies demand workers who have the skills to work with their programs. Having these skills helped me a lot during my job search.
Now I work as an accounting clerk for Mannan Pique, an accounting firm that works with retail stores. They have over 17 locations around Vancouver and I work at the one in English Bay. It was my dream to work here and so far I'm really happy with my job.
I think you should contact the college staff; they really listen to you and give such helpful advice. If it weren't for the people at Vancouver Central College, I wouldn't be where I am today. Working…and happy!"

My first job in Canada was maintenance at McDonald’s-I worked as a janitor. It was a survival job for me- just to pay for my rent and everyday expenses.
I decided to pursue to get into Architectural fields, but in order to do this , my potential employers needed a Canadian diploma. So, I tried to organize my schedule to work and study at the same time. I really enjoyed AutoCAD program, especially the Interior Design course because we are applying the knowledge of AutoCAD into the real projects. We are practicing our profession in designing based on Canadian Standards.
Architectural Desktop program is interesting to work with. You look at you project in 3-dimentional angle and modify, which is very creative.
As for the job search, when I had my practicum, the architectural firm ‘GK Architectural Design’ in Burnaby decided to employ me right away. They were amazed by performance because they school trained us for 8 months for designing and using AutoCAD programs on a daily basis. When I graduated I had all the necessary skills. My architectural background was a great advantage as well.
Right now I really enjoy my job in Canada because the school gave me the chance enter the architectural field.
